How to create a book cover

Interior design and proofreading are important to give your book the professional look to attract prospective buyers. However, if the interior design is great, but the cover unattractive, it's not likely to sell well. On the other hand, if you have a stylish cover with a well-written blurb, a reader attracted by the design and intrigued by the blurb might actually decide to buy your book. Here's how to create a book cover that will intrigue your readers:

Hire a good designer: In order to design an effective cover, you need a high level of design and graphic art skills along with a good knowledge of the software. If you want to be sure that you have a professional looking cover, you are better off hiring a professional graphic designer, especially one who has had previous experience designing book covers.

You need the following elements on your cover:

  • Title and/or subtitle of the book
  • Author name
  • Appropriate images that fit the theme and genre of the book
  • More sales copy, such as other books by author or celebrity endorsements

When designing the cover, consider:

  • Size of the book
  • Genre of the book
  • Quick summary of the underlying theme or ideas in the book.
  • Examples of popular books in the same genre
  • Any other specific demands you may have, like foiling or embossing.
